NATTUVANGAM / TALA CLASSES
Nattuvangam is the art of reciting rhythmic syllables and playing the cymbals in sync with the dancer’s footwork. Mastering this requires a strong grasp of the Tala system, precise coordination of recitation, and the ability to play the cymbals effectively. These sessions are designed to train students in the essential aspects of Nattuvangam, starting from the basics of holding the Tala (instrument) to executing both simple and complex Jathis with accuracy and confidence.
A key component of the course will be training students to recite and analyze rhythmic sequences, thereby helping them demystify the structure of Jathis and the various combinations of Adavus in a Korvai. Additionally, students will be introduced to the recitation of items such as Alarippu and Jatiswaram, further enhancing their ability to internalize rhythm and apply it seamlessly in both Nattuvangam and dance. As the student progresses they will also be able to composing Jathis and wield the cymbals accordingly. Emphasis will be placed on developing an in-depth understanding of rhythm and its integral role in Bharatanatyam.
Alongside practical training, students will explore various theoretical concepts such as Tala Dasha Pranas, notation writing, Yatis and many more interesting concepts. These classes aim to provide students with a solid rhythmic foundation, enabling them to develop a keen sense of timing, precision, and confidence in their understanding of Tala. The Beginner and Intermediate levels of these classes are conducted online, ensuring accessibility to students from different locations, while the Advanced levels are conducted in person, allowing for more refined training and hands-on guidance.
